Avatara is the Dubai outpost of chef Rahul Rana's 16-course pure-vegetarian Indian tasting menu — the only Michelin-starred vegetarian-Indian restaurant in the world as of 2026. The original Avatara opened in Mumbai in 2018 and earned its star within five years. The Dubai outpost (DIFC, Voco Hotel) opened in mid-2023 and earned its first Michelin star in the 2024 Dubai Guide — a near-instant promotion.

Rana spent nine years researching regional Indian vegetarian traditions — from Hyderabadi paan-leaf cookery to Manipuri bamboo-shoot fermentation, from Karnataka heirloom-rice gruels to Punjabi tandoor breads — before designing the tasting menu. Each of the 16 courses represents a specific regional technique, ingredient, or recipe, and the menu changes seasonally as new regional projects are integrated.

Avatara's price (AED 700-900pp depending on premium course substitutions) places it firmly in fine-dining territory, but for a seriously researched 16-course progression with a Michelin star, the value-per-dirham is striking. We have eaten there four times since opening; consistency is what marks it. Same precision in March as in October.

Final Verdict

Avatara is a once-a-year-special-occasion meal, not a weekly visit. The 16 courses are intellectually serious in a way Dubai's Indian fine-dining scene rarely attempts, and the Michelin star is genuinely earned. Book 4-6 weeks ahead. AED 700pp is exceptional value for the format and the star.
