Kuwait's food scene in Dubai is one of the Gulf's best-kept dining secrets. With a substantial Kuwaiti expat community, dedicated family-run restaurants, and a deep appreciation for the slow, aromatic cooking traditions of the Arabian Gulf, Dubai delivers machboos and harees that rivals anything you'd find in Kuwait City itself.
We've eaten at every Kuwaiti restaurant in Dubai — multiple times, across different days and times — and ranked them honestly. From the best fish machboos in Karama to the most atmospheric ghabga experiences in Jumeirah, this is the list you need.
The Best of the Best
Kuwait Diwaniya
Dubai's finest Kuwaiti dining — full stop. The machboos deyay here is a masterclass: the rice absorbs chicken fat, loomi smoke and cardamom for hours until every grain is stained gold and perfumed. The fish machboos with zubaidi (when available) is even more spectacular. Service is warm, unhurried and thoroughly Kuwaiti in spirit. The muhallabia dessert — set with just enough cornstarch, perfumed with rose water, topped with crushed rose petals — is the best in the city.
Al Aqsa Kuwaiti Restaurant
This is where Dubai's Kuwaiti families eat. The fish machboos here uses zubaidi sourced daily from Al Jubail Fish Market — you can taste the difference. The rice absorbs tamarind and loomi, the fish skin crisps at the edges, and the whole dish arrives with a bowl of yoghurt-cucumber salad and paper-thin regag bread. Packed every Thursday and Friday night. The value is extraordinary — AED 65 for a fish machboos that would cost three times as much in Jumeirah.
Excellent — Worth Every Dirham
Dar Hamad
A Dubai institution since 2008. The marag lahm (slow-cooked lamb stew with vegetables and dried limes) is their signature — eight hours of cooking yields a broth of extraordinary depth. Order it with their house-made regag bread, the paper-thin crackling flatbread. Their harees on Fridays is exceptional. Expect a wait on weekends — they don't take reservations and the word is well and truly out.
Kuwaiti Nights Café
Purpose-built for ghabga — the Kuwaiti tradition of late-night feasting. After 10pm this place transforms: tables fill with Kuwaiti expats settling in for extended sessions of shared dishes, strong karak chai and excellent sweets. The muhallabia is the best in JLT, and the khanfaroush (saffron doughnuts served hot from the fryer) are addictive. Good for groups — tables accommodate up to twelve comfortably.
Gulf Flavours
The smart choice for Business Bay workers wanting a proper Kuwaiti lunch. The set lunch (AED 75: starter, machboos, dessert, drink) is one of the best-value deals in the area. Their muhammar (sweet rice with dates and saffron) is a revelation if you've never tried it — order it alongside the chicken machboos for a proper Kuwaiti contrast experience.
Highly Recommended — Excellent for the Price
Gulf House
The best budget Kuwaiti option in the city. AED 35 gets you a full machboos plate — proper size, properly seasoned, with salad and bread. The harees on Fridays only is spectacular and sells out by 1pm. No ambience to speak of, plastic tables and fluorescent lights, but the food is absolutely genuine. Workers from the Kuwaiti community eat here — that's all you need to know.
Al Kuwait Restaurant
A solid neighbourhood Kuwaiti option in the heart of Karama's dining district. The sambousek here (fried pastry triangles filled with spiced meat and onion) are made fresh and are among the best Gulf snacks you'll find for AED 5 each. The balaleet breakfast is served until noon — a must-try if you haven't had the sweet vermicelli and egg combination before.
Bayt Al Khaleeji
Broad Gulf menu with a strong Kuwaiti section. Their gabout (stuffed whole lamb with spiced rice — requires 24hr advance order) is exceptional for large groups and family celebrations. Regular menu includes reliable machboos, marag, and a fine muhallabia. The karak chai here is legendary — thick, perfectly spiced, served in proper Gulf-style small glasses.
