Dubai's Russian and Eastern European food scene punches above its weight. Driven by the city's large Russian-speaking community, a small but committed group of restaurants serves everything from authentic borscht and hand-made pelmeni to spectacular fine-dining versions of the classics. We ate at all of them. Here are the 15 best, ranked and reviewed honestly.
Volkonsky Bakery & Restaurant
Dubai's most beloved Russian establishment — part artisan bakery, part proper restaurant. The borscht (AED 55) is the city's finest: deep crimson, rich and layered, with a proper dollop of smetana (sour cream) and fresh dill. Pelmeni (AED 68) are hand-made daily and served with brown butter. The medovik honey cake (AED 38) is the best Russian dessert in the city. Locations in JLT, Downtown, and Dubai Mall mean you're never far from a borscht fix.
Pushkin Restaurant
Dubai's most sophisticated Russian dining — named for the great poet, serving elevated classics in a dark, atmospheric dining room. The wagyu beef stroganoff (AED 195) is exceptional: meltingly tender wagyu in a deep, creamy mushroom sauce over hand-rolled egg noodles. The Beluga caviar blini (AED 220) is a true luxury experience. Georgian wines anchor an impressive drinks list. Service is polished and gracious.
Slavyanka Restaurant
Run by a Ukrainian family, Slavyanka is Deira's best-kept Eastern European secret. The chicken Kyiv (AED 75) bursts with herbed butter. The borscht (AED 42) is deeply flavoured with proper lardons and a generous smetana crown. Varenyky (AED 58) come stuffed with potato and cheese, or sweet cherry filling. The pampushky garlic bread (AED 18) is some of the best bread in Dubai, full stop.
Rasputin Restaurant
Dubai's most characterful Russian restaurant — with Friday live music, generous portions, and the city's best solyanka (AED 52): a rich, tangy meat soup with olives, capers, and smetana that warms the soul. The blini brunch (weekends, AED 85) is a Dubai institution. Portions are Russian-generous. The shashlik skewers (AED 88) are charcoal-grilled over real coals in the kitchen courtyard.
Babushka Café
The most cosy Russian café in Dubai — intimate, warm, with mismatched crockery and a menu that reads like a grandmother's recipe book. The pelmeni with brown butter (AED 48) are outstanding, as are the syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes, AED 38). The Russian tea ceremony with jam and lemon is a unique experience. Perfect for solo dining or a quiet two-person lunch.
Moscow Restaurant
Marina views and reliable Russian classics — the beef stroganoff (AED 105) is properly made, the borscht (AED 55) is satisfying. Not as authentic as Slavyanka or Rasputin, but the setting is considerably more glamorous. Good for tourists and those wanting Russian food with a view.
