Braai isn't just barbecue — it's a South African social institution. Open flame, hardwood coals, boerewors coiling over the heat, and friends gathered around the fire. Dubai's South African expat community has brought this tradition to the UAE with serious conviction. These are the spots doing it properly.
Proper braai means open flame, hardwood coals, and patience — no gas grills allowed in true SA cooking.
#1 — Hyperama Diner, Al Quoz
Hyperama Diner — The Real Deal
If Dubai has one true braai institution, it's Hyperama. This isn't a restaurant that "does braai" — this is a South African lifestyle hub where braai is the religion. The open-fire grills run all day, pumping out properly smoky boerewors, peri-peri chicken, lamb chops, and sosaties. The butchery out front sells everything you need to take home and braai yourself.
The vibe on Friday and Saturday afternoons is pure Johannesburg backyard — groups of South African expats, kids running around, someone managing the coals with the kind of devotion only a braai master knows. Reserve ahead on weekends.
#2 — Broekie's Braai, Al Quoz
Broekie's Braai — The Communal Fire
Broekie's Braai focuses entirely on the social ritual of the braai — the outdoor terrace is designed around communal fire pits where large groups gather for an evening of proper South African grilling. The setup is deliberately informal: you order your meat, they bring it from the fire, and you eat at long communal tables surrounded by the smoke and laughter that define a proper braai.
Great choice for groups of six or more — the communal platters are a bargain and the atmosphere is convivial. Best visited after dark when the fire pits glow and the temperature drops.
A proper braai platter: boerewors, lamb chops, peri-peri chicken, pap, chakalaka, and roosterkoek.
#3 — Tribes Restaurant, Dubai Mall
Tribes — Upscale Braai Culture
Tribes takes braai culture upscale — the signature wood-fire grill is at the heart of the kitchen, cooking premium wagyu cuts, grass-fed fillet, and their beloved boerewors starter. The interior design draws from African tribal aesthetics: dark wood, warm lighting, and textured finishes that feel genuinely transported from the Cape.
While not a traditional outdoor braai setting, the flavour of the wood-fire cooking comes through in every cut. This is where Dubai's South African community takes their non-SA friends to show off what proper braai-influenced cuisine can be.
#4–6: More Braai-Inspired Spots
The Braai House — JBR Beach Walk
Combining the South African braai tradition with a beachside Dubai setting, The Braai House at JBR is an unexpectedly great combination. The outdoor terrace overlooks The Walk and catches the sea breeze — and the wood-fire grill serves boerewors, chicken and steak with proper SA sides. Less traditional than Hyperama but the location is unbeatable for a summer evening.
Visit →Bushman's Grill — Jumeirah
A neighbourhood favourite in Jumeirah that has been running for years. Bushman's Grill blends South African and African bush cooking inspiration — think game-influenced spice rubs, wild herb marinades, and a menu that celebrates the flavour of the Southern African outdoors. Family-friendly, consistent, and well-priced for the quality.
